Not every wedding ceremony needs to follow tradition.

For couples looking for something more relaxed, more personal, or simply less formal, alternative ceremonies offer the freedom to do things differently.

At The Olde England Kiosk, your ceremony takes place in our Tudor-style hall, creating a setting that feels warm, atmospheric, and focused on the moment itself. This page explores some of the rituals you might choose to include as part of your ceremony.

Alternative Wedding Venue in Darwen, Lancashire — Ceremony Ideas & Inspiration

WHAT IS AN ALTERNATIVE CEREMONY?

An alternative wedding ceremony is simply a ceremony that doesn’t follow a fixed script.

Instead of a traditional format, it gives you the flexibility to shape the moment in a way that suits you — whether that’s through symbolic rituals, a more informal structure, or something much simpler.

Most alternative ceremonies are led by a celebrant, rather than a registrar, which allows far more freedom in how the ceremony is written and delivered.

CEREMONY IDEAS

There’s no single way to approach a ceremony. Different rituals carry different meanings — it’s about finding what works for you.

Select a ritual below to take a closer look.

Handfasting Ceremony

A symbolic ritual where your hands are bound together using cords or ribbons, representing unity and commitment. A simple, visual way to add meaning to your ceremony.
Four Elements Ceremony

A ritual drawing on earth, air, fire, and water — often used to represent balance, connection, and grounding. It can be adapted to suit a more personal or informal ceremony.
Spell Jar Ceremony

A modern ritual where meaningful items are placed into a jar as part of the ceremony. Often kept afterwards as a reminder of the moment.
Jumping the Broom

A symbolic act marking the transition into a new chapter together. Rooted in tradition, but often included as a simple, visual moment within a more relaxed ceremony.
Flower Ceremony

A soft, visual ritual where flowers are exchanged or arranged during the ceremony. Often used to represent growth, unity, or the blending of two lives.
Candle Ceremony

Lighting a central candle together creates a quiet, focused moment within the ceremony. It works particularly well in an indoor setting.

WORKING WITH A CELEBRANT

Most alternative ceremonies are led by a celebrant rather than a registrar. This allows far more flexibility in how your ceremony is shaped — from the structure and wording to the inclusion of symbolic rituals.

A celebrant works with you to create something that fits your day, without the limitations of a legally worded ceremony script.

Legal marriage ceremonies would take place separately, with the celebrant ceremony forming part of your wedding day itself.

We can recommend experienced celebrants who are familiar with the space and style of ceremonies held here.
